The Temple Atlas

A written walkthrough

The Temple Atlas is the immersive front door of the MUAYTHAIPAI certification journey: a hand-drawn manuscript map of Thailand, in the tradition of the samut khoi dam (the Thai black folding book), where the five levels of the Naga-to-Garuda certification ladder stand as five temples along one climbing pilgrim road — from the river country in the south to a summit above the mist. On capable devices the same climb is walkable in three dimensions, as a constellation of shrines in a night valley.

Every temple opens into a museum of its level: seven chambers that walk the curriculum of that stage as Thai culture and history, in Thai and English. All five museums are open to every visitor. The first temple's study — the Naga course — is free. The study of the four higher levels opens with the Online Training membership. No level's certificate is ever issued online: each one is earned in person in Thailand, when a kru watches every skill performed and signs it off.

The museum, chamber by chamber

  1. I · The River Gateพญานาค · Phaya Nak — the great serpent of the MekongBefore the art had a name, the river had a guardian. The old accounts say the Naga rises from the Mekong at the end of the rains, and its coils line the stairway of every temple in Thailand. Muay Thai begins here: a fighting art carried by war, kept by ritual, older than the kingdom that keeps it now.
  2. II · The Chamber of Standingจดมวย · jot muay — the fighting stanceEvery art begins with how you stand. The guard is taught first because everything else is thrown from it — hands high, chin down, weight ready to move in any direction. Stand this way and any trainer in Thailand will know you as a student.
  3. III · The Chamber of Fistsหมัดตรง · mat trong, the jab — หมัดเหวี่ยง · mat wiang, the crossThe jab measures; the cross answers. Thrown from the stance, the two punches are one breath — the oldest conversation in fighting. On the pads a trainer calls them in Thai, and the study teaches you to answer without translating.
  4. IV · The Chamber of the Raised Legถีบ · teep, the pushing kick — and the shin raised against the kickThe teep is less a kick than a door closed with the sole of the foot: it keeps distance, and distance keeps you. Against a kick the answer is the shin raised — bone meets bone, trained until it is reflex. Understand both here; earn both on the mat.
  5. V · The Chamber of the Bound Headมงคล · mongkol — ประเจียด · prajioud — ไหว้ครูรำมวย · Wai Kru Ram MuayThe mongkol is woven, blessed, and kept above head height; no fighter enters the ropes without it, and only the kru removes it. The Wai Kru Ram Muay is the dance performed before fighting — thanks given to the teacher, the camp, the art itself. This is the violent spirituality that sets Muay Thai apart: the fight is preceded by prayer.
  6. VI · The Chamber of the Matเตะ · te, kick — ชก · chok, punch — เข่า · khao, kneePad work has manners: bow onto the mat, strike when called, stop when the pads drop. The calls come in Thai — te for kick, chok for punch, khao for knee — and the study teaches you to hear them. Learn the etiquette and the words, and you can train with any trainer in Thailand.
  7. VII · The Thresholdไหว้ · wai — the bowThe study of Naga ends with a bow, not a ceremony. Nothing online awards a certificate: 3 days before a kru, ฿4,900, and the Naga certificate is signed on the mat in Thailand. Beyond this door the path climbs — Phayra Nak, Singha, Hanuman, Garuda.

  1. I · The Drowned Courtเมืองบาดาล · Mueang Badan — the underwater cityAt Kham Chanod the old people say the forest floats, and beneath it lies Mueang Badan, the drowned court of the Serpent King. The second level does not leave the water — it goes deeper into it. What the first temple showed you as seven separate skills, this court binds into one moving thing.
  2. II · The Chamber of Chainsลูกไม้ · luk mai — the strung techniquesA punch alone is a word; a combination is a sentence. Jab, cross, kick — three strikes thrown as one breath, each hiding the next. The court drills the chains until the second strike no longer waits for the first to be answered.
  3. III · The Chamber of Stepsย่างสามขุม · yang sam khum — the three-fold stepThe old footwork of Muay Thai is a triangle, walked over and over until it disappears into the legs. Angles and pivots take you off the line an opponent is reading. Water does not resist — it moves around; this chamber teaches the feet that lesson.
  4. IV · The Chamber of the Caught Kickจับขา · jap kha — catching the legEvery kick offered is a gift, if the hands are educated. Catch, hold, and return — the counter thrown while the other stands on one leg. Defence in Muay Thai is never only refusal; it is the beginning of an answer.
  5. V · The Chamber of the Bindจับคอ · jap kho — the neck holdThe clinch begins here: hands on the crown, forearms like the roots of the banyan. Entry, posture, control — the quiet war fought at the shortest distance. Serpents do not strike from the bind; they squeeze.
  6. VI · The Chamber of Sok and Khaoศอก · sok, the elbow — เข่า · khao, the kneeThe elbow cuts and the knee rises: sok tat across, sok ti down, khao trong straight through the middle. These are the short weapons, kept for the range where fists lose their reach. The court introduces them slowly; the temples above will sharpen them.
  7. VII · The Second Thresholdความอดทน · khwam ot thon — enduranceBeneath everything the court teaches runs conditioning: the rope, the shadow, the road at dawn. Endurance is not a skill on the list; it is the water the other skills swim in. The path leaves the wetland here — above, the stone begins.

  1. I · The Lion Terraceราชสีห์ · Ratchasi — the royal lionPaired lions guard the doors of the northern temples: strength is examined before it is admitted. The terrace is reached by a stair cut into the cliff, and the climb is part of the teaching. Ten days on this stone — the first level that asks the body to prove what the mind has accepted.
  2. II · The Chamber of the Turning Hipสะโพก · saphok — the hipPower in Muay Thai is not thrown by the arm; it is turned by the hip and passed upward like a wave through stone. Weight transfer, rotation, the floor pushing back. When the hip learns to speak, every strike you already own doubles its voice.
  3. III · The Chamber of the Sweepทุ่ม · thum — the throwIn the bind, balance is currency, and the sweep is how it is spent. Off-balance, turn, and let the ground do the striking. The lion does not wrestle; it waits for the moment weight betrays itself.
  4. IV · The Chamber of First Sparringเล่นเชิง · len choeng — playing the artSparring begins as play — controlled contact, light and thinking. It is a conversation, not an argument: you offer, read the answer, answer back. Ego is left at the door of this chamber; it does not fit through.
  5. V · The Chamber of Distanceจังหวะ · changwa — rhythm and timingEvery fight has a measure: the range where you are dangerous, and the rhythm on which danger travels. Managing distance is strategy made physical — a handspan decides what is possible. This chamber teaches you to own the measure rather than visit it.
  6. VI · The Chamber of the Rising Kneesเข่าโค้ง · khao khong — เข่าลอย · khao loiBeyond the straight knee lie the curved and the flying: khao khong around the guard, khao loi leaving the ground entirely. They are earned techniques — power borrowed from the hip and the step. The bells under the eaves ring for them.
  7. VII · The Third Thresholdใจสู้ · jai su — the fighting heartPressure reveals; that is its use. Fortitude is trained like any muscle — rounds when tired, composure when hit, pads held for a partner as service. Above the terrace the canopy thickens, and the old art waits inside it.

  1. I · The Monkey General’s Prangหนุมาน · Hanuman — the monkey generalIn the Ramakien it is Hanuman who leaps the sea — soldier, general, servant of the divine. The monkeys hold this temple, and its stone is older than the others: a sanctuary of the earlier art. The fourth level trains the fighter — and begins to train the one who will stand behind fighters.
  2. II · The Chamber of the Old Artมวยโบราณ · Muay Boran — the ancient boxingBefore gloves there were ropes — kard chuek, hemp bound across the knuckles — and before the ring there was the battlefield. Muay Boran is the root system under everything you have learned. The prang keeps its forms the way stone keeps an inscription.
  3. III · The Chamber of War Plansชั้นเชิง · chan choeng — craftA fight is planned the way a campaign is planned: the opponent studied, the ring divided, traps laid rounds ahead. Strategy is not the opposite of instinct — it is instinct given a map. Here the study moves from how to strike to when, and why.
  4. IV · The Chamber of the Full Exchangeซ้อมคู่ · som khu — the paired trialFull sparring: still controlled, no longer gentle. Everything is present at once — the chains, the bind, the short weapons, the plan — and everything is tested by an intelligence trying to undo it. This is the closest the study comes to the truth before the truth itself.
  5. V · The Chamber of Close Elbowsศอกกลับ · sok klap — the reverse elbowIn the pocket, where no fist has room, the elbow combinations live: forward, across, and the turning sok klap that arrives from behind the shoulder. Close range is the old art’s home ground. Precision here is measured in finger-widths.
  6. VI · The Chamber of the Cornerพี่เลี้ยง · phi liang — the cornermanBetween rounds, a fight is won in sixty seconds of truth-telling. Reading a fight from the apron, holding pads that teach instead of merely receive, finding the words a tired fighter can actually use — this is a craft of its own. Hanuman was a general; generals watch more than they strike.
  7. VII · The Fourth Thresholdความพร้อม · khwam phrom — readinessThe circuits burn the last softness out; readiness is decided honestly or not at all. Above the canopy there is only sky — and the sky belongs to one bird.

V · The Fifth Temple

  1. I · The Summit of the Garudaครุฑ · Khrut — the GarudaThe Garuda is the emblem of the Thai state itself; only the last temple may bear him, and only at the highest point. From the summit, the map’s one real place lies below — the valley, the training yard, the mats where certificates are signed. Mastery in Muay Thai has always meant one thing more than skill: the art is safe in your hands.
  2. II · The Chamber of the Ram Muayไหว้ครูรำมวย · Wai Kru Ram Muay — the dance performedAt the fifth level the dance is no longer watched; it is performed. Your Ram Muay names your teachers, your camp, and the lineage you now carry, in movement older than any record. It is composed the way a signature is composed — yours alone, and legible to everyone.
  3. III · The Chamber of Precisionความแม่นยำ · khwam maen yam — precisionSpeed without placement is noise. Elite striking is a narrowing: the target smaller, the window shorter, the strike unchanged. The summit air is thin; nothing wasteful survives here.
  4. IV · The Chamber of Masteryความชำนาญ · khwam chamnan — masteryFull sparring proficiency; the clinch owned in every position, entries and exits like doors in a familiar house. Mastery is quiet — it looks like calm and reads as inevitability. This chamber teaches nothing new; it asks for everything already taught, at once.
  5. V · The Chamber of the Teacherครู · kru — the teacherThe art survives by being given away. Lead a drill; take a beginner through the stance you learned in the first temple — and discover the stance again from the other side. The ladder you have climbed becomes a thing you hold steady for someone else.
  6. VI · The Chamber of the Recordตำรา · tamra — the treatiseThe old Muay Thai was never written down; this one is. History, rules, ritual, the names of things — examined in writing, because a keeper of the art must be able to state it, not only show it. This atlas itself is a page of that record.
  7. VII · The Fifth Thresholdพิสูจน์ · phisut — to proveOne month before a kru: the comprehensive assessment, body and knowledge together. Nothing online awards a certificate — the fifth is signed where the first was, on the mat, in the valley below this summit. The map ends where Thailand begins.

The style paths

At each temple's gate a student may choose the fighting archetype they climb as — the real style vocabulary of Muay Thai. The choice holds for that level, and together the choices become a style history across the climb.

  • Muay Matthe puncher.Heavy hands. The Muay Mat walks forward behind the jab and cross, trades kicks for punches, and ends exchanges with hooks to the body. Your home ground is wherever the fists are taught.
  • Muay Khaothe knee fighter. The clinch is home. The Muay Khao closes distance, binds, and scores with knees — the style of grinding pressure and iron lungs.
  • Muay Femurthe technician. The Muay Femur reads rhythm and range, answers everything with timing, and wins by being unhittable more than by hitting hard.
  • Muay Taethe kicker. The Muay Tae builds the round kick into a cannon and scores from range, shin against everything.

A style path shapes guidance, drills and identity — it never changes what a certificate requires or says. Every student, whatever their path, is signed off on the same skills by a kru in person.

The two truths

Online, you learn to understand each skill and how to practice it — never that you can do it. That is decided on the mat.

The study within opens with Online Training. ฿299 a month. Cancel anytime. The certificate is still earned in person.

The path continues at Phayra Nak. Online Training opens all four sealed temples — ฿299 a month.
